Sony announced the biggest change yet to its smartphone line-up at CES 2012 – the official dropping of the Ericsson brand and the ushering in of NXT phones.
The Sony Xperia Ion is one of two Ericsson-free handsets announced – the other being theSony Xperia S – which share a lot of similarities in specs but have differing chassis.
The first thing we noticed about the Sony Xperia Ion was just how light it was, we expected more weight behind the smartphone given that it has a 4.6-inch screen and a wide-ish chassis to compensate for this.
We did find that the sharp edges of the screen did get a little uncomfortable after holding the phone for a while, though the slightly curved back nestled nicely in our palm.
When it comes to button layout, there's a number of smart buttons on the bottom of the device which worked fine but we weren't that enamoured.
The phone's ports are situated on the side of the device, with a microHDMI port nestled neatly next to a microUSB port.
The screen itself was great to look at – Sony has opted to put a 720p Reality Display on to the handset and we are glad they did as colours pinged and reading things like web text was easy, even when we didn't zoom into the copy.
As the screen is packed with power Sony has added a 1.5Ghz dual core processor into the phone which worked a charm in our initial tests.
The phone was zippy – swiping through tweets and going from one app to another showed no apparent lag and the jump to the Xperia Ion's camera was fast. Sony is quoting 1.5 seconds from nay to yay and we can't argue with that number.
This speed of picture taking is backed by a 12MP sensor, which is fantastic given the phone has no real added bulk to compensate for such a large sensor size.
And we like that Sony has added a dedicated camera button to the phone, which helps it stand out from the cameraphone crowd.
As this phone is primed for the US market, there was LTE on board – this the first time Sony has brought a 4G phone to market. We couldn't try out speed times in a test environment but even on a packed show floor we managed to navigate to TechRadar in seconds on the Xperia Ion.
Sony looks to have made a real leap forward in its smartphone output with Sony Xperia Ion. It's a phone that comes with a number of added extras, including PlayStation certification, links to the Sony Entertainment Network and there's even an optional media dock which gives the phone something of a webtop experience.
It's not the most beautiful phone on the market but it is one packed with power.
We were a little underwhelmed that the phone is going to come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box but Sony assures us that Android 4.0 will come in the second of 2012. And we would rather Sony worked on making ICS compatible with all the phone's functionality rather than have a buggy smartphone from the off.
The Sony Xperia Ion US release date is Q2 and it is exclusive to AT&T.
