BlackBerry Passport

BlackBerry Passport
BlackBerry’s days in the smartphone race might be numbered but they are not completely over, as the Canadian manufacturer officially unveils the upcoming BlackBerry Passport.
A peculiar, squat device, the BlackBerry Passport is set to feature a square 4.5-inch display with a 1440 x 1440 pixel resolution.

Although an unconventional size and shape, this boxy handset – which at 3.18-inches wide will be considerably fatter than even the 2.79-inch wide Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – will mark a high-spec return for the ailing phone maker.

Announced during the company’s quarterly earnings call, the BlackBerry Passport – which is being tipped as the ideal Instagram phone thanks to its square display – will also reportedly benefit from a quad-core Snapdragon MSM8974 processor, Adreno 330 graphics and 3GB of RAM.

Reverting to type, BlackBerry has also revealed that the sizeable device will play host to the company’s traditional physical QWERTY keyboard while a 3450mAh Lithium-Ion battery will keep things chugging along.

Despite BlackBerry needing an instant hit in order to correct its smartphone slide, it isn’t going to get it with the Passport.

The company has revealed that the QWERTY loving handset will not be officially launched until a dedicated, London-based event this September – a launch window which will put it in direct competition with the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

The BlackBerry Passport – named for its severe, rectangular design – was unveiled by new BlackBerry CEO John Chen as the company announced a quarterly net income of $23 million (£13.5m).
