The Kingston Data Traveler Generation 3 (G3) has several practical features going for it. The loop is sturdy and can be attached to a key ring, it works with Linux-based systems and it has a cap that fully encloses the USB connector. It also is the only USB flash drive in this review that can be co-branded. This USB flash drive is available in four storage capacities: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. Depending on the memory capacity, the drives are available in white with red, blue, yellow or gray trim. We like that Kingston discloses the read and write speed of this drive because many manufacturers do not. The 16GB and 32GB versions of this drive can read at 10MB/sec and write at 5MB/sec. These speeds are adequate for most uses unless you need to stream high-resolution video or a game directly from the device.

The Data Traveler is compatible with all operating systems including Windows XP, Vista and 7, Mac OS 10.5+ and Linux 2.6x+. The 32GB version can store up to 19,048 5MP (megapixel) images, 6,080 MP3 songs or 2,176 minutes of MPEG1 video. If you would like to store standard movies on the 32GB drive, it can hold up to about 25 standard movies or eight HD movies.

Even though this USB drive is the third generation (G3) of the device, do not get that confused with it being a USB 3.0 drive. The Kingston Data Traveler is a USB 2.0 drive; it is just the third version of the Data Traveler. USB 2.0 speeds are not as fast as USB 3.0 speeds, but most devices are not yet 3.0 compatible, so this is not an issue for most people. If you need to connect your USB drive to a newer device, check to see if it is USB 2.0 or 3.0 before deciding which drive is best to suit your needs.
